Trivia Challenge is the creation of Golden Roll Productions founder Michael W. Mowery. Produced on the campus of Salisbury State University, this is one television pilot that actually went on to become a weekly series. For Golden Roll Productions, this series was one in which they had complete control over. After the disappointing Hollywood Creations, The Really Really Big Show and with Campus Insider still in development, Golden Roll Productions finally hit the jackpot this this spriest hit.

Trivia Challenge is modeled after three of America's most popular game shows. Wheel of Fortune and the Price Is Right can be seen slightly through the program. The biggest influence however was from Jeopardy since this is a question and answer show.

SSU television personality Bill Bendelow (The Really, Really Big Show) hosts the show which features two competitors going against each other every week. The contestants compete for prizes donated by the campus community as well as trying to gain the high score for the semester. The top three high scores receive the top prizes at the end of the season. Trivia Challenge airs Friday through Tuesday at 8:30 and 11:30pm on campus cable SSU-TV12.

In what would become the last television show produced for an independent study, creator Michael W. Mowery would have to overcome many obstacles in order to succeed. First of all the showdown for host of the program took place. Lee Stanford (Hate Speech 101, The Really, Really Big Show) was competing against Bill Bendelow (The Really, Really Big Show) for the job. After months of debate and one on one conversations with Mowery, it was finally decided that Bill Bendelow would host the program.

As far as the control room crew goes, Mowery hand picked the crew from many talented SSU students covering the spectrum of Seniors down to Freshman. Coming over from the theatre department is senior Joe Hopkins to run the sound board. He is considered to be one of the most talented sound technicians on campus. Making the change from theatre to television will be a difficult task. Also coming from the theatre department is Junior Patti Mazur who will be operating the sound board. The character generator will be operated by long time associate of Mowery's, Senior Noel B. Hepp. Noel is one of the more knowledgeable technical television personalities on campus. Finally after realizing that producing, directing, and technical directing the show was to much to handle, Mowery called in Junior Jeff Disharoon to be the technical director. The studio crew could be trained as time went on because the really didn't have to do to much except keep a steady shot. The final crew member (on air talent actually) approached Mowery on his own. Junior Chris Bennett showed interest in television and asked if he could be the show's announcer. Not wanting an announcer at first, Mowery decided to give it a shot and now pleased that he did.

Episode TCT02 02/02/95
Matt Peek - -20 vs 15 - Dan Luise

In the first studio produced show, two crew members appeared as contestants so that the control room crew could practice without the pressure of having "real" contestants to deal with. This test episode showed that modifications to the rules as well as the production aspect needed to be changed in order order to keep the pace of the game moving.

The categories: Round #1: 50 & 60's songs, Star Trek, Sports, Entertainment and News. Round #2: History, Stage & Screen, Cheers, Sports and Entertainment.

The sponsors this week included: The Flyer, Sophanes and slates for Vending Services and WSUR.

This episode provided some good moments and became a learning experience for Bill Bendelow who appeared to have some trouble with the rules of the game. This show did not air.

Episode TC101 02/09/95
Matt Peek - 200 Vs 90 - Dan Luise

In what was supposed to be another trial run, the crew performed like veterans and Bill Bendelow seemed comfortable as host. Modifications to the scoring system made points easier to obtain. The monitor was moved to the center of the set. That made Bill Bendelow's job easier because he no longer had to move the "Wheel of Fate" out of the way after the changing of each category. Another change made to speed up the game was that Bill Bendelow now only had the answers in front of him. The floor manager had a dry erase board in front of her. She would listen to the CG Operator call out the question number he used. She would then write that number down on the board and hold it up for Bill to see. Now Bill just had to read the question from the monitor and then glance at the floor manager for the question number and simply refer to his crib sheet for the answer. This complicated sounding process is actually a tribute to all involved and also allowed the number of questions per round to increase by an average of 20. The only crew change was that Kathy Piechota was promoted to VTR Operator. This was part of her training process as she would go on to produce her own show.

The categories. Round #1: TV Sitcoms, Music, Nightly News, Sports and Geography. Round #2: Science & Technology, TV Stars, 80's Songs, Sports and Geography. The 80's songs category would go on to become a fixture on the show as it became on of the most popular categories.

The Flying club would debut as a sponsor for the first time in this episode. As a result of the success of the crew and talent, Michael W. Mowery decided that the show would air marking the beginning of Salisbury's most popular game show of all time. Trivia Challenge also won the race to get on the air first for SSU-TV.

Episode TC102 02/16/95
Kristie Dooley - 455 Vs 865 - Elizabeth Pagel

This is the first episode in which Trivia Challenge would use contestants from outside the crew. This particular show would be won of the must entertaining of the season. The Contestants were Elizabeth Pagel (a standout for SSU's track and cross country teams) taking on Kristie Dooley (WSUR and Rugby). The new scoring system provided valuable as Elizabeth would reach a score that stood for three weeks until it was broken.

A Couple of changes to the show were that the theme music would be used to send the show to and from commercial breaks. Bill Bendelow will now introduce each category before the start of each round. Finally Chris Bennett premiered "the prize couch" on the "Prize Showcase" portion of the show.

A few changes to the closing credits were that Michael Mowery now receives a lighting technician credit. Autumn Moore is dropped from the list of question coordinators and Bill Bendelow and Robin Guida were added. Dan Luise is credited as a studio assistant. Vicki Huchko is credited as a talent scout. Finally Lisa Rucker, Dar Much, Amy Wilkinson and Autumn Moore are dropped as they would no longer be apart of the show.

The categories. Round #1: Science & Technology, TV Stars, Sports, Geography and 80's songs. Round #2: Super Heroes, TV & Movie themes, Countries & Capitals, Baseball and Cartoons.

Episode TC103 02/23/95
Raj Kaup - 45 Vs 40 - Erin Hutchenson

After two consecutive high scoring, fast paced games, this show hit rock bottom. Only 85 total points made for a boring show. As a matter a fact, this game was so slow moving that producer Michael W. Mowery cut the second round short just to end the game.

The contestants were SSU alumni and television personality Raj Kaup and faithful viewer Erin Hutchenson. Their personalities were dry which made it difficult for Bill Bendelow to interact with them. On the positive side, Bendelow and Chris Bennett started to interact better and the control room crew began to anticipated each others moves.

The only crew changes were that Kathy Piechota was moved to the job of Control Room Assistant where she would observe the operation of the show and assist Patti Mazur by checking off the questions asks so that they would not be used again. Also Anne Downey would floor manage this show even though Sarah Elcik's name still appeared in the credits.

The categories: Round #1: Stage & Screen, Cheers, Sports, Entertainment and History. Round #2: 50 & 60's songs, Star Trek, Sports, Entertainment and News.

Sophanes dropped their commercial and replaced it with a slate promoting the audition dates for the final performance of the year. Also the Flyer did not receive a commercial break this week.

Episode TC104 03/02/95
Sean Lennon - 160 Vs 1285 - Kyle Graves

This episode increased Trivia Challenge's popularity on campus. For one thing, Elizabeth Pagel's high score was broken and there was also great interaction between the contestants and the host. Even Michael Mowery got caught up in the interaction with the competitors.

The show ran smooth as for the first time there was no changes on the crew. A return to high scores allowed for a lot of questions to be asked and the contestants appeared to really enjoy themselves. This episode also featured the new Video Toaster generated high scores board which was the first look into the technical advances the show has evolved to. Also used here for the first and only time was a video category to compliment the popular audio categories. Another nice touch here is that Michael Mowery made his good friend Lee Stanley the answer to a question in the SSU-Life category.

The categories: Round #1: Movies, SSU-Life, College Mascots, Brady Bunch and Mixed Drinks. Round #2: Basketball, Star Wars, 80's Songs, Cartoons and Hockey.

No new sponsors this week although the Flyer returned and the Flying Club departed for a long haul.

Episode TC105 03/09/95
Tom Fontaine - 200 Vs 45 - Gary Brickman

This show marks the first in what would become an avalanche of shows which feature friends of Michael Mowery's. Tom Fontaine would make his SSU-TV debut on the program. A bizarre pattern is starting to form in that their would be one very entertaining program followed by a real bad one. This was no exception. Although Tom did score 200 points, their was no chemistry between between the contestants or with Bill Bendelow.

On a more positive side, the crew suffered no studio changes for the second consecutive week. The five main control room crew members (Mowery, Disharoon, Hepp, Hopkins and Mzaur) were all still in place from episode #1. The crew is functioning better at this point than any one expected.

Since this was the second taped show of the day, no new categories could be developed.

The categories: Round #1: Cheers, Sports, Stage & Screen, History and Entertainment. Round #2: 50's & 60's Songs, Star Trek, Sports, Entertainment and News.

Making their debut as a sponsor was WBOC. This is really to plug the upcoming showdown with Salisbury TV rival WDMT. Also Vending Services replaces their slate with their own commercials. They were produced by Michael Mowery and written by Kiloma Wiggons. Also for a change of pace, Mowery showed some of his past projects during the second break.

Episode TC106 03/16/95
Tom Rapp - 205 Vs 190 - Mike O'Lennick

A very anticipated episode featured contestants from Salisbury's rivaling TV network affiliates. Tom Rapp is an audio technician for the ABC station WDMT-47 and Mike O'Lennick is the meteorologist at the CBS station WBOC-16. Even though the final scores were not very high, this would be the most competitive game of the season. Good interaction between the contestants, Bill Bendelow and Chris Bennett helped to make this one of the best produced shows.

The Categories: Round #1: Cartoons, 80's Songs, Hockey, Basketball and Star Wars. Round #2: TV States, Geography, Sports, Nightly News and Music.

Returning as a sponsor was the Flying Club. New sponsors included Scoops Ice Cream and Converse. WBOC retained it's sponsorship and the remaining commercial time was donated to PSA's.

In an attempt to upgrade the quality of the show, Jeff Disharoon created the new opening promo. This basically allows viewers to see who would be playing before the game begins. It was created on the Video Toaster and runs for approximately 30 seconds.

Episode TC107 03/23/95
Dave Kilkeary - 565 Vs 350 - Michael W. Mowery

This episode will be remembered for a couple of things. First of all it shows the continuing thinking on the part of Michael Mowery to keep the success of the program flowing. This means that it is approaching the end of the semester and changes will need to be made to the crew. The crew members that need to be replaced due to graduation are the director, audio technician, floor manager, producer and host.

This particular day was set aside in the shooting schedule to train a new crew. Dave Kilkeary (On the Air...with Dave & John) was visiting SSU this day. Michael Mowery asked him if he would be interested in being on the show. Originally only one round was supposed to be taped, but since the new crew was working out so well, the second round went on. Ironically, Chris Bennett was not in the studio that day. His part was edited in at a later time to give the appearance that he was there.

The second thing that this episode will be remembered for is that the shows creator was beaten on the show. Many people thought that was pretty funny, and it was. That just goes to show that anybody can win if they tried. Good interaction between Dave, Mike and Bill made this one of the most entertaining shows of all time.

Mowery officially handed the show over to Jeff Disharoon on this day. Mowery retains his created by credit, but now shares the producers credit with Jeff. Robin Guida was promoted from camera #3 to technical director. Kathy Piechota was promoted to Scoreboard Operator as Patti Mazur has now left the show. Dan Luise landed the CG job as he would replace Noel Hepp. Noel would remain as a studio crew member and floor manager for the remainder of the semester.

The categories: Round #1: History, Stage & Screen, Cheers, Sports and Entertainment. Round #2: 80's Songs, TV States, Stage & Screen, Science & Technology, Sports and Geography.

This show featured the new opening promo. No new sponsors were added.

Episode TC108 04/14/95
Charlie Lewis - 220 Vs 355 - Brian Houser

This show saw many crew changes as well. Most significantly was that Matt Peek was promoted from camera #2 to announcer. Also caught up in the shuffle was Noel Hepp who served as Scoreboard Operator. Warren "Fred" Bailey would make his only appearance in the credits this season as the floor manager. Finally Ken Messer debuts as audio technician as he replaces Joe Hopkins. Michael Mowery who is still the shows producer is in the control room to help oversee the studio operations and lend assistance to Messer.

The Categories: Round #1: History, 60's Songs, Star Trek, Sports and Monkees Mania. Round #2: 70's TV, Movies, Dead Rock Stars, David Letterman and Salisbury, MD. One interesting question in the Monkees Mania category asked: Name the four Trivia Challenge crew members who made their own Monkees video.

This show also presented new features: Title graphics and audio beds to introduce the categories (created by Disharoon). This helps during the transition periods between questions.

As far as the sponsors go, only WBOC was used this week. During the first break was the SSU-TV promo created by Jeff Disharoon and Michael W. Mowery

Episode TC109 04/21/95
Bill Martin - 2130 Vs 435 - Jeff Janieszewski

A special episode in that Michael Mowery returned as director. The show features two of Mowery's friends as the contestants. Bill Martin would reach a point total of 2130 points. That is the high score for the semester and will probably stand for a long time to come. Ironically Jeff was leading entering the challenge round which means he is only the second player to loose the game when leading at that point (Mowery was the first.)

The categories: Round #1: Golf, Rap Songs, Batman, Slogans and TV States. Round #2: Pot Luck, Hockey, Stadiums & Arenas, Useless TV Trivia and MTV History.

Many crew changes in this one as well. Noel Hepp returned to the floor manager's chair. Michael Mowery would receive overdue credits for Set Designer, Master Carpenter and Computer Graphics Concept credits. Jeff Disharoon receives a credit for Computer Graphics Design. Finally Bill Martin, Kris Mowery, and Joe Orr receive credit for question coordinators.

New computer graphics to announce Bill Martins high score spiced up the look of the show. Also for the first time Trivia Challenge tried to become interactive by placing a phone number on the screen to call in and win a free CD. Also at the end of the show there is a special announcement for audition dates to take over as host of Trivia Challenge.

The heavily discussed Monkees video appeared again during a commercial break to change things up while new sponsors were being developed.

Episode TC110 04/28/95
Little Guys - 0 Vs 810 - Big Guys

In the last taped episode of the semester, SSU Rugby team took on a fraternity. The show was absolutely out of control as it becomes the first time that Trivia Challenge had to be censored before it could air. The tip of the ice was when a studio audience member streaked the set right before the closing credits. The streaker's "private parts" were cleverly concealed by a shrunken down Trivia Challenge logo.

The commercial breaks were replaced by the shows logo and the only crew change was the Cindy Strauss was the floor manager. It also marked the first time that Michael Mowery was not in the studio during the taping of the show, but did manage to get into the control room to inform Bill Bendelow that that Little Guys were the only team ever not to score a point in a game.

Episode TCT01 - The Lost Episode 05/04/95
production date 01/26/95
Jeff Disharoon - 80 Vs 10 - Dan Luise

This show was the first taped episode of Trivia Challenge's short history. Many things were different such as the rules, camera angles sound effects and even the light and sound buzzers. The purpose of airing this episode was to show the campus just how far the show advanced over the semester. A nice touch was that in the lower right corner of the screen is a transparent triangle which specifies to the view that they are watching a lost episode.

Before the show begins, Trivia Challenge creator Michael W. Mowery introduces himself and gives to special presentations. First up is the top 5 categories of the season. Secondly, a one minute retrospective of the season laid down to the music bed from Cheers is shown. The the lost episode and final aired showed of the semester begins.
